Microsoft recently announced Microsoft AX for Retail- a new end-to-end solution for midsized specialty retailers that offers a deep level of integration across point of sale, store management, supply chain, merchandising and financials to address business productivity, while enhancing customer service.

Microsoft’s main selling point to retailers is that Dynamics AX for Retail integrates with the Microsoft solution stack. It’s designed for midsize retailers, supporting various functions, such as merchandising, point-of-sale, store management and supply-chain operations.

Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI) is a commonly used term in companies that distribute products in the consumer goods and retail space. Often software vendors claim to support vendor managed inventory requirements simply through defining a separate ‘warehouse’ for inventory that is stored at the customer’s facilities. Classifying Your Inventory

Most distribution companies carry different types of inventory items. For example, an electronics distributor may carry televisions, computers, radios, speakers and miscellaneous parts. In working with the inventory items, it may be important to find the items based on these categories. There also may be multiple levels of classifications, for example:

 Main Classification = Video
Video Type = Television
Screen Type = LCD
Accessories = Includes DVD
Energy = Energy Star Compliant
HDMI Compliant = YES

Item classification in Advanced Distribution for Dynamics AX makes it possible to categorize items into as many as SIX hierarchical levels. The main related functions are:

  • Search and select items in all multi-criteria searches (for example, during order-taking)
  • Define price conditions (discounts, charges) at any classification level (ex: discount for a sub-family)
  • Statistical analyses
